Having been around these forums for a while, I know this deal gets posted a few times per year. However, I did a search and could not find a post referencing this deal except in the archives (November 2001 last post). Since we get new members all the time, and this IS one of the hottest deals going, I thought it appropriate to post the info again. Even so, there is new HOT information regarding Columbia House that even the old hands here should know about, at the end of this post.

The folks over at DVDTalk have a forum devoted to various DVD clubs, where you buy x DVDs for $x.xx each now and x DVDs later at full price. The best club is Columbia House. However, do not join them without consulting this forum, and more specifically, this thread, the Columbia House DVD Club FAQ.

In that thread, you will find special codes which give you better deals than you can find anywhere else. The best deal right now for new members is code 47B, which gives you 4 DVDs for $.49 each + S/H, 1 bonus DVD at $9.95 + S/H, and only 2 more to buy at club prices (minimum $19.99 each + S/H). Your total outlay for 7 DVDs? $66.71, which comes out to $9.53 per DVD, including S/H. *

The real genius of that thread is that it tells you which DVDs available for enrollment (the first 5) have the highest MSRP, and which fulfillment selections (the last 2) are underpriced at $19.99 club price. Therefore, you get the most expensive DVDs as enrollment selections, and the best value DVDs to fulfill your membership requirement. You can have 2 accounts open at one time.

The NEW HOT information, at least according to the forum at DVDTalk, is that FOX titles are now available from CH. They are only available as fulfillment selections right now, but in about 3 months, they should be available for enrollment as well.

* edited to reflect $9.53 is with S/H, per BrunoPuntzJones' post

this is, and always has been, a scorching deal.

the fox line adds movies from the aliens, die hard, etc. sets.

very good deal, and 9.53$ is with shipping if i remember right. those guys at dvd talk deserve kudos for the work they do in keeping up with all this. a real science by those guys. amazing how they took the time to break it down into groups of what to buy and when.

I just joined the Columbia House DVD club for the first time thanks to the guys at DVDTalk. I used a different code that gives you 9 DVDs at an average price of $9.86. The FAQ at DVDTalk indicates you have to enroll over the phone. I was able to enroll via the website. Now I only have to wait to see if the order goes through.

Thanks, this is good info. I've always avoided Columbia House because I didn't know you could become a "preferred member" in order to not receive a selection each month.

My favorite part of the info was the list of "good", "bad", and "soup Nazi" CSRs :)

I joined Columbia house before and got 5 dvds for $15 and all I had to do was buy 2 more dvds at 19.99 each. I mainly joined because they had certain dvds which were really expensive retail, IE. Apollo 13 (usually $30), Clerks ($30), and a couple of other ones. Great deal IMO. It's great when you catch them with their free shipping promotions

That DVDTalk thread represents a LOT of work on the behalf of a handful of people, plus the contribution of many, many forum members regarding things like "CSR intelligence". It's really grown to be an amazing resource.

A lot of people dismiss CH as a scam--but if you use the guidelines over at DVDTalk, you can really maximize your benefit. CH is absolutely a great way to build a nice DVD collection on the cheap.

i have recently been reading through the threads at dvdtalk and don't think the free dvd with referrel works for all codes. in fact your friend won't get as good a deal. someone pointed out there that it'd be better to just ask your friend for one of his dvds for introducing him to dvdtalk :)

I'm right there with you. There's a lot of movies they've recently added that I'll get when they become available for enrollement. More kudos for DVDTalk.

I have just signed up from a referral with the 47B code and everything seems to be fine. I will read up on it at DVDTalk, tho'.

Anyone know what the normal "Monthly Specials" are that they run for the DVD club? I'm in their VIdeo club (but haven't ordered anything in a very logn time). They usually do a Buy 1 movie at 19.99 get on half off or something like that. But since I can get most movies for under $10 at Target, WalMart, Sams etc, the VIdeo club is pretty retarded.

Is the DVD club any better or will I be cancelling after I join because it's not worth the money to buy anything from them ever again?

They do run specials, but these are usually only useful to get your fulfillment selections at even better prices, or to get something like the Godfather Box Set for $75 or so and have it count as 3 fulfillment selections.

The whole idea, though, is not to stay in the club, but to join... quit...rejoin....quit...rejoin... etc.

You nailed it. The dedicated members of DVDTalk have put hundreds of hours into doing research and refining the excellent Columbia House thread.

I've personally done this deal about 4 times, everytime it's worked like a charm.

Just make sure to thoroughly read the ENTIRE thread (don't just skim over it) and follow their instructions to the letter, you can't mess up.

Soon I'll have to place another order ...

"FAQ: What is the first thing I should know?
When you call, CSRs will identify themselves by name. If you get someone on the list, act accordingly; if they are on the No Soup For You!!! list, hang up."
