Is there any drives under a $100 that can burn dvds and cds well, (and no crappy copyright stuff) or are all the combos garbage?

Sure there are. 8x ones, too. Newegg has the NEC 2500A constantly under $100. LiteOn has their 812 DVD burners under $100, too.
 
It's fairly easy to find a sale on a 8x DVD/CD drive if you look in the Hot Deals, and it seems like there's a new sale at least once a week.

I picked up a Lite-on drive that does DVD +/- R/RW at 8x, and burns CDs at 40x for $80 at OfficeMax about 3 months ago.
 
You dont even need to find them on sale for that price, there are many DVD+/-RW drives for under $100...
