They can't change the encryption scheme without breaking all of the current console players. All of the new copy protection crap on top of CSS was just adding little bugs to the DVD that would trip up rippers but not most players.

Plenty of people have the source. It's not that hard to figure out how DVD Decrypter does what it does anyway, just nobody's bothered to put out rival freeware because there's no point competing with the original. But now that the original's stopped, well....

If anyone finds out who the company was please post. coz it's time for a boycot if you ask me. I hope someone else picks this up and makes it open source and that will be it.

Of course you know, a boycott of even the entire membership of this forum will do very little to the company's profits. And I doubt that even 10% of the members here would participate. But the thought is nice.

I have never liked Sony, & if someone can confirm that it was them indeed, i will take extra precaution to never purchase anything they make (don't have anything yet).

if your friend gave you a home made dvd, it wouldnt be encrypted, and you could copy it with windows explorer.

now in this country here it definetly is. and I bet it's legal in more countries in europe. Consumer organisations have won lawsuits against audio Cd manufacturers installing copy protection in their CD's because the law here states that you are entitled to make one backup copy. hence copy-protection is illegal here. dunno why it still goes up for DVD's tho, must be som big lobby work.

It's not a company.

It is the good ole US Guvamint doing the policing for VIACOM, MGM, SONY, RIAA, etc.
using DCA as a basis to protect oridinary citizens from themselves.
