DVD Writers -- What do you think?

What do you guys think about standalone DVD Recorders like this one?

Is it too early to get one? Do they work well? Would it be better to get a computer DVD writer?

Thanks! (I posted this in Video, but apparently it is off topic there)

i would definitely not buy any dvd writers, standalone or computer, especially not the one you linked to.

the one you linked to is dvd-ram, incompatible with the majority of dvd players and dvd drives.

the reason i wouldn't get any other one either, is because

a.) media is still too expensive
b.) format competition has not died down yet... the two major competitors are dvd-r/rw and dvd+r/rw

once those two issues are resolved, i will probably get one.

The price isn't too bad considering it has an mpg2 encoder and does VBR. The problem is it uses DVD-RAM, which is not likely to become the next standard. If you absolutely need one, I'd go with a computer burner (like the Pioneer one) and a TV-card.

I sure as heck won't be getting DVD Writer as long as media continues to cost $9 each nor would I buy cheapo shoddy $4 media. We're looking at 4.7GB and thats alot of data to lose by using crappy disc.
