DVD Writer hardware question

I just got a DVD Writer this past weekend, first one finally.

Anyways I notice that the CD holder cage that comes in and out is somewhat loose? it comes out ok and goes back in ok but if I move it up and down and left and right it moves a lot, specially up and down.

I'm still in my 14 day return window so just wanted to make sure what?s ok and what not ok.

Are you talking about the disc tray? Mine have a little bit of play (1/8") when it's fully out.

yes the disk tray. I guess i'm going to have to compare it to my old cd-writer that i took off.

The tray is irrelevant (except that it should be black to absorb stray laser reflections) - my Plextor tray is capable of a fair amount of movement in all directions when open and it was going for nearly $200. in the Spring of 2004 when it first came out. All the tray does is carry the disc in and out. When the disc is in, it is centered and clamped at the hub and no longer contacts the tray at any point. You will also note that when the tray is IN, it is well locked down so it can't contact or interfere with the motion of the disc in any way.

thanks for the input, just got a little worried and yes the tray is black.

It's not broken. All optical drive trays are like that. As long as the discs you burn come out fine and playable, it's all good.
