I want to use a pioneer dvd upconverter with an Acer 22inch widescreen LCD monitor (1680x1050). I am worried i will have scaling issues (distorted picture to fill entire screen, since it is not a standard 16:9 ratio) and I also believe it will not run at 1080p, since it is only 1050 lines. Does anyone have any experience with this and if so can you recommend this setup and answer any of my questions? thanks

Use an HDMI-DVI cable and you should be ok. The distortion will depend on whether your monitor has the option to not scale non-native resolutions to full screen.

do you think without the scaling I would get the video picture in a window, with black bars on top, bottom, and sides, or just top and bottom?

Hm....good point....the image probably wouldn't take up the entire screen...You might have to put up with a bit of stretching to avoid this.

Why not play on your computer?

Only Gateway monitors properly letterbox 16:9 to 16:10 at less than 19*12 resolution.

yeah I probably would use my computer... cheaper and scales easier. I just wasn't sure about whether my dvd-roms upscaler would give me the same picture quality as a standalone dvd upscaler

It's all in the software. Mess around with ffdshow and the like until you're happy.
