can someone point me to a good guide online that uses the fewest pieces of software. all that i've found so far use several different programs for different parts of the ripping/encoding process. is there one program that does everything?

thanks,
Vivan

Edit
someone in my dorm told me to use gordian knot, which seems to be just a shell for a bunch of other progs...better than nothing i guess.
so i'm ripping my Italian Job dvd, and the dvd read speed is only 2.1x (3mb/sec) on a 16x drive...i know its not gonna go to 16, but is 2.1 average? seems a bit low.

thanks again

On the DVD rip question, many DVD burners will only rip at 2x (some sort of concession to the MPAA, I think). My NEC had that limitation until I updated to a hacked firmware. Yours might have that option also.

DVDx is what you are looking for. It reads from the DVD while recompressing to DivX, xvid, etc, so you don't need 9GB of free drive space for it. Removes Macrovision protection and can go from DVD to VCD/SVCD in one shot also.
