DVD Software Decoder

I'm working on a new build and I'm having some difficulty with the DVD drive. It either runs choppy or locks up all together when I attempt to watch a DVD. Anyone had this problem and been able to fix it?

I installed WinDVD (it cam with the drive - I assume it's the decoder). Which software decoders to you recommend?

FYI Here's the system I'm putting together:

MSI K7T Pro2a
900 mhz AMD T-bird
256 mb pc133 mem
Geforce2 MX 32mb(elsa)
Maxtor 7200 rpm 20gb drive
DVD 10x 40x (can't remember the brand)
HP 8100 series CDRW

I would first make sure that you enable the DMA on your DVD-ROM and see if that doesn't solve your problem. Also, make sure you only have one DVD decoding software installed at a time, because they often conflict with each other.

As for the best software decoder, most people use either PowerDVD or WinDVD, both of which are excellent.

The latest versions of PowerDVD (3) and WinDVD(2000) cohabitate peacefully, and perform better than hardware decoders. Don't miss that advice about DMA, and make sure you have the latest decoders because there were major improvements in these programs just recently.
