DVD RW Error

When attempting to burn media onto DVD RW disk with an Iomega external DVD RW combo drive, I get error messages involving the drives innability to recognize the media disk, as well as windows failiure in recognizing the disk format. I know the drive speed and media speed are compatible, and the under the drives properties it seems to recognize the inserted blank DVD as a DVD RW, but it can't seem to burn anything to it. Any idea what the problem could be?

Have you used this disk before? Could it be a DVD+RW and you need a DVD-RW or vise versa? Have you ever used this brand media before?

How old is the drive, is it possible that the drive could be failing? Do you have any other DVDRW disks to try and see if they work?

After trying the disk in another working DVD RW drive that should be compatible with the disk format and recieving the same errors, I'm beginning to think the disks are the problem. Is this unheard of, or does a bad batch of DVD RW's come out from time to time?
