Can you copy a DVD verbatim with these drives the way you can copy a CD verbatim with a CD-RW drive? For example, can I copy a DVD movie in its entirety? What do people use these for?

would suggest a free app called dvdshrink

it goes from hollywood dvd-9 dual layer one disc to user back up dvd-5 single layer one disc

you can choose what to cut out and what compression ratio to use

How about Nero? I'm using version 5.5.8.0 for my CD-RW drives.

Yes sir,

DVDxCopy will make a flawless copy... For personal use however. It is also a one time burn, you can not reburned a burnt DVD.

You need to read up a lot on this subject. Not quite as easy as cd-r's

Use dvdshrink to rip it, and nero to burn it.

Actually, you can't. See, DVD movies come in DVD-9 (or dual-layer) format. This is done by pressing two DVD-5 (single layer) layers into one disc. This is done during the manufacturing process.

Current DVD writer only support DVD-5 format, and as far as I know there are no plans to create a dual layer writable format.

Most applications, like DVD X Copy will need two DVD-Rs to copy a commercial DVD movie.

However, some older titles were manufactured in DVD-5, so you can copy them verbatim into a single DVD-R.

You can tell if a disc is dual layer by it's color. Gold for dual and silver for single.

Why do they do that? Considering how horrible I am with CDs and DVDs. I wouldn't mind copying my own DVD Movies to TDK's Armor Plated DVD's. Anyway, the DVD's that already have a movie on them that you buy are they DVD "-" or are they DVD "+"?

I dont really understand what you mean by this. The + & - always signified to me the type of burners. The + burners are aimed to be compatible with existed dvd-roms and players. So I would assume that would fit into the neither category, however I am not sure. More then likely, you won't be able to truly copy them without losing quality in the actual final product, unless you just strip out everything and just copy of the movie then you have a small chance of it being under 4.7 if it is less then a two hour movie roughly.

nero wont bypass the copy protection of hollywood movies

it will only copy 1:1 movies that dont have copy protection and only if the original dvd is less than 4.7 GB

Yes, you will need two Blank media for Dual layers disc if you use DVDx copy. If you use DVDx copy xpress you will only need one. What the program does is copy only the movie portion. It re-encode the movie into a lower bit rate to about 4.36 gig even the disc said 4.7 gig but it can only fit 4.36 gig on a disc. No extra no menu will get copy, only one audio and 1 subtitles.
I tried to backup my Titanic DVD on the DVDR-W with just 1 audio with no subtitles just to see how good it will look. It didn't look that bad considering the movie is almost 180 minutes long, I would say the picture is about 40 % better than VHS tape. It's nothing that I will do to keep though. The reason I buy the DVD player is picture quality why settle it VHS quality.
