DVD-RW drive suddenly won't play DVD's

Seems to be no end to my sorrows with this new build of mine. I just tried to play my backed up copy of The Terminator today and windows media player just sat there. Blank screen and eventually said not responding, mind you I played this disc on my previous build a couple weeks ago. I tried the original boxed copy and it plays fine. I also tried X3 last stand today and it said my dvd region didn't match the disc... I took it out, looked at it and put it back in. What do you know it magically plays fine, take it out, put it back in 5 minutes later and dvd region doesn't match again.

I'm wondering what might be going on here? Is my dvd-RW dieing? Is the new motherboard giving me trouble? Is it a codec problem? It's an NEC Optiarc AD-7191S and I updated the firmware to 1.02 which was the latest I could find and reinstalled my Klite Codec Pack. Divx videos run fine and most of my original dvd's work ok but at least 75% of my backups won't open in WMP but do work on my tv's dvd player. All my drives are set to AHCI as well and the specs are in my sig.

Thoughts or advice is appreciated

I hope this isn't the film studios new method of "bricking" drives running "backup" copies of movies.
