DVD RW "disappears" during burn (with Nero)

I have an ASUS A8V with an AMD 3500+
Sony DVD RW DRU-700A and DVD DDU1621
DVD-RW has the latest firmware (yv06)

Currently trying to burn a PAL video into an NTSC video.

Problem: During the burn, the DVD RW stops responding,
Nero 6 hangs and needs to be shot down. The weird
thing is:
In Windows Explorer, the drive that used to show up as
DVD-RW is now identified as a CD-ROM drive.

But I can't eject the disk, the little hole isn't helpful either
and I need to reboot the machine. Any ideas what
might be happening?

I know you have to say that, but everything IS up to date.
Wouldn't bother anyone if I had not taken care of that first 🙂

It appears that the Label Change (DVD -> CD) is a common
Windows XP problem (XP not recognizing blank DVD). But that
still leaves me with a hanging drive.
Driver - BIOS - Nero?...

This is another "well-DUH" question 😱 but that's a brand-new drive, right? You set its region yet? Sorry I can't think of anything more insightful than that, I don't have any experience in DVD video work to speak of.

If that's not it, then maybe elaborate on what tasks the drive does work for? CD burning, other DVD burning...? You can also run the Nero InfoTool and heave the resulting logfile at the Nero tech-support people if you want... when I did that, they ended up setting me up with an InCD upgrade to solve my issue.

It's a fairly new drive, region is set 🙂
I have successfully burned DVDs on that drive before.
I'm increasingly wondering whether it might be Nero that's
at fault (from what I hear, that wouldn't be a huge surprise)

I'll keep debugging. Maybe I come up with something.
Not all is lost, yet. THX for trying to help!
