DVD-ROM Quality?

Chapter11

Member
Hi,
This would be my first time getting a DVD drive and the prospect of watching DVD movies on my computer intrests me.
I was just wondering how the quality of playing DVD's on the computer will be.
Is it better than a DVD player for the TV?

Better? No, why would it be? Your monitor may or may not be better than your TV, but if your PC is like mine it's one hell of a lot noisier than your TV. To me, watching DVD's on the PC is a little extra sumpin. But I have a recliner in my office, 5.1 speakers surrounding me, a 21" monitor. Even with all of that, I prefer watching movies on the TV in the family room.

Heck, you can get a DVD player to attach to your TV for $80, so why not get both?

Perhaps C11 was referring to the monitor quality: a PC monitor should have much higher resolution than TV's, so DVD image resolution could be higher.

My monitor's as large as my TV, but I haven't received the DVD-ROM drive yet.

Yes I was wondering how picture quality would be on the monitor also.
I know that everything would be much more enjoyable in my family room with surround sound speakers and on a big TV and everything.
I spend much of my time on the computer though and wanted a DVD player to watch a little something between work breaks. 🙂

So I guess what I should have asked is if watching DVD's on your computer is even worth it or if I'd get so poor quality that I wouldn't even enjoy it?

I'm running an Athlon XP +1700, with a GF3 ti200, surround sound speakers, and digital surround headphones if that makes a difference.

Watching a DVD on your computer will give you the same quality as watching it on your big screen.. providing you have a decent monitor. With that rig they'll run smoothly and you can just kick back and enjoy. Of course you're experience will be limited by your computer's sound system and monitor size, but hey, it's still entertaining.

my 21 flat monitor is very much better than our 19 inch or the 25 inch in picture detail plus i get the peace and quiet of watching the movies in my own little office away from the kids😉

my computer is almost silent so i guess that's the difference

and its nice to know i can go in the livingroom or bedroom to watch a stand alone dvd player as we have those also.but even my kids/wife like the computer dvd much better so much so all 3 computers have them and yes there are differences just like the standalones

but then i'm pretty bad i use the movie bicentennial man to do my video card upgrades if it don't make the picture even better it goes back lol

just my .02 cents worth🙂

Everyone I ever talked to about this say that that a dvd unit for your t.v. will have much better quality.🙂
