DVD-ROM problems

My dvd/cd player is messed up. First I was having problems playing my games. Starcraft, Quake III, and Broodwars. I used a lens cleaner, but that didn't work. Then I used a cd scratch repair kit on Starcraft and it worked. I also borrowed a good copy of Broodwars from a friend. Broodwars and Starcraft worked for a little while, but then I got the same errors when starting the cd. Could my drive be scratching the CDs or could it be a lens problem (I used a lens cleaner, didn't help)? I want to be able to use my drive again!

I had a similar problem with my old school 2x Toshiba, worked fine for 2 1/2 years but has recently started spinning nonstop whenever I insert a cd. After trying just about every software, hardware, bios fix I could think of, I tried placing the cable on the highpoint controller of my BE6II, something you're not supposed to do but it fixed the problem.

I don't know if this is a coincidence or not but I think that SC might be the root of the dvd problems. I've noticed that this game tends to access the cd quite often during lay, enough to wear out the dvd over a couple years???
