dvd rom problems

I am having trouble getting a DVD rom to work on my computer. I have read some postings on dvd roms and it seems like I need to install drivers from my videos cards website and not use the driver microsoft provides. The drivers page for my card is down right now. Should changing the driver solve my problem?

The computer recognizes the drive as a dvd drive, but will only play cds in it. When using powerdvd or just trying to access the drive it says there is no dvd in it(when there is) Any help?

Please help me. No one responded before I guess that means I am an idiot and don't deserve advice because I am too dumb to figure out such a simple problem. Well I gave it a try and couldn't fix it. So please if you have some advice give it.

I have updated the firmware on my dvdrom. Bios can autodetect it as a dvd rom but then when it restarts (after saving and exiting) bios it comes up as a cdrom. Windows detects it as a dvdrom but it can only play cds. I also tried changing my video card drviers because someone else had a problem where drivers epdated by windows disabled dvd playing.
