Hi,

I recently upgraded to SP1 & SP2, + changed my mb to an Asus P4P800S, so I dunno which caused a conflict. My DVD-Rom, Pioneer 116, no longer reads properly. Everytime I try to access a file on it, or copy from it, I get either the error

The process cannot be completed because of and I/O device error

or

The function could not be properly performed.

Dunno how to fix it. Help, thanks!

how is it hooked up? primary slave? secondary master? have you tried moving it to another channel? make sure your cable is not old and frayed?

It is my secondary master. What do you mean a different channel? Switch it with my cdrw (sec slave)? I could try using other cables, just figured it was software related.

what about primary slave? or with different cable? i've had this before and it's an easy thing to check before going through and reinstalling software.

also, i dunno about going to sp1 or sp2, but when i first converted to xp, i had to reinstall a lot of programs to get them to work correctly, actually i had to reinstall most programs, like nero and so on.

hope this helps.............

Changing your motherboard without reinstalling XP is not recommended for a peaceful and easy life

However, if your cdrw works ok on the same cable then either it's a bad cable or connection (check the plugs are fully inserted) or your drive may need cleaning

hope this helps..........

My primary slave contains my 2nd hdd.

After installing my new mb, I reinstalled xp, for a cleaner setup.

I think I'll try a new cable and pick-up some compressed air on the way back home. Is that the best way to clean it?

Does it happen in safe mode?

When you go here in regedt32:

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Description = DVD/CD-ROM drives
UpperFilters =
LowerFilters =

what values do you have in UpperFilters and LowerFilters?

Default DVD/CD-Rom Drives

I don't see any Upper/Lower Filters

I have 2 subfolders 0000 and 0001 under it. 0000 is my dvd-rom Driver desc is CD-Rom, and INF file is cdrom.inf Is that a problem?

***

Actually just tried it in Safe Mode, works fine. Weird, now what? lol. thx.

In Regedt32 click on that {4D36E....} key again, and on the right side you'll see the lower and upper filters. Look again. It's not directly *under* 4D36E - they'll appear on the right side, in the right window pane. If you have anything there, make a note of it, and then delete the contents (the text), and try again.

You have a driver that doesn't load in safe mode, but does work in normal mode, that's causing it to not work. I'd uninstall all of your CDROM-using applications (Alcohol 120%, DVD-Copy, etc.) until you find the problematic app, if you don't want to go in via the registry.

I don't think its there at all. I went down a couple and ***967 (disk drives) had an Upper Filter - "PartMgr" Tried taking that out, but didn't do anything.

You should put that back. Only the CD/DVD ROM one should be changed. You should always have an upper and lower filter value there though.
