DVD rom drive problem

for some reason my DVD drive on my laptop suddenly decided to stop working. i have no idea why. it was just after i had finished installing Orangebox and uninstalling Roxio Easy CD Creator. Not it does not show up in My Computer. When i go to my device manager it shows the drive as "HL-DT-ST CVC-ROM GDR8084N" whihc i assume is correct, but it says that

"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device."

i tried to uninstall the driver and it says the same thing.
the crappy windows troubleshooter "Was unable to solve this problem"... typical.

so how do I get this stupid drive working again? it should be plug and play! why does it not work?

Looks like the drive isn't connecting properly, you got data corruption in its name already ("CVC-ROM"? I don't think so.). Pull it and plug it back in. That's easy if it's removable, but it might require a technician if it isn't.

No, lots of manufacturers use the CVC code prefix, but it's mostly used in foreign markets.
I wouldn't bother using the windows troubleshooter, it ends up making you do circles usually with no end to solving the problem.
If uninstalling the drive in Hardware Properties and reinstalling doesn't work, your drive is most likely defunct.
What is the age of the drive?
