DVD-rom drive not recognizing any discs

Hi all,

I plugged in a DVD-rom drive today on my comp running winxp pro. Upon bootup, it is recognized. I checked device mgr and it is ok.

It just would not play any type of discs, CD-roms, CDR's or dvd's. I installed the poweredvd software for the dvd's and still nothing.

I need some suggestions if I am doing something wrong or is it the drive???

LMK
Thanks

it posts?

when you put a CD in the drive can you open it with explorer?

try using a storebaought CD or DVD (not burnt)

reinstall current drivers from the manufactures website.

how old is it? you should check out the manufactures RMA policy while at their website.

well i can give him a bump and answer some questions for the drive

It's right over 1 year old and it's a Lite-On 165h. I can't remember exactly when I bought it but it wasn't much more than 1 year ago (sometime last summer?). It was purchased from newegg in original Retail box, and it did work perfectly on my box as a master on a single IDE channel with a CDRW as a slave.

NYCdude tells me that it posts and it is recognized in device manager but when you put a CD, it just pops up with the 'insert a cd' message box.

bacillus - how do you clean the optical laser?

Tried storebought music cd, cdr, regular cd and dvd movie. When I put each in the drive, does not recognize anything is in there.

Do you need to open it up to clean or a dvd disc cleaner will do???

i pulled up info from newegg:

Invoice Date 8/7/2002 8:35:25 AM

that sucks b/c I think Lite-On's warranty is 1-year from an authorized retailer. Though i'm not quite sure if newegg's an auth. retailer, it's 1 week too late regardless.
