Here is my config:

Primary IDE
Master 80GB Hard Drive
Slave 200GB Hard drive

Secondary IDE
Master DVD
Slave CD-RW

on motherboard RAID free

Now I want to add another Hard drive but I don't want to connect to RIAD is it ok to connect DVD CD-RW to RAID, any known problems.

It is not recommended to put optical devices on a RAID chip. I am assuming you have an on-board RAID card.

I did it for about 1 year with a CD-RW with th CD on an IDE channel. The only reason why I switched back was 1: you can't boot off of the RAID chip from a CD/CDRW/DVD and 2: Norton Ghost doesn't recognize the drive for back up purposes.

Those aren't really very big problems.. The Norton Ghost thing is a software issue.

Is there anything significant that says it isn't a good idea?

In my KR7A133 Raid owners manual they recommend NOT putting DVD CD-RW to RAID on the RAID connectors.

I have my four hard drives connected to my RAID connectors and my DVD CD-RW to the regular IDE controllers. System rocks in this setup.

I wonder why...

Does your intigrated RAID support ATAPI, if not you can't hook a cd/dvd-rom up to the RAID, only hard drives.

I am not sure my motherboard is Abit KT7A-RAID with latest BIOS, the reason I don't want to connect the Hard drives to RIAD is, my friend had the same motherboard with the Hard Drives connected to RAID it crashed and lost all the data.

I don't think you can connect an ATAPI device (cd/dvd-rom, zip, CD-RW) to the RAID connections. If you look at your MoBo, the first 2 ide ports are the normal ones. IDE3 and 4 are the RAID enabled connections. You CAN connect your HD's to 3 and 4 and run them like normal hard drives with no raid, but you can't connect the other devices to them.

The RAID controller should work okay as a normal IDE port, just use it for your third drive. It doesn't have to be configured as RAID, and more than likely it wasn't due to the drive being on the RAID controller's port that caused him to have data loss, unless he was actually running a RAID array (I had the KT7-RAID for awhile and it kept losing the RAID array configuration). Running as a normal add-in IDE controller, it should work fine.
