DVD ripping...

There is a really good site somewhere that people have posted here once or twice before.. But I cant seem to find it, if someone has a good URL, please post it. thx.

And, what should I compress the DVD with? Divix? MicrosoftWM? Suggestions?

Just for my curiosity, is it even legal to make a copy of a DVD for personal use? They have all that warning stuff at the beginning of all the ones I own stating that it is illegal to be reproduced in whole or in part.

I dunno. I dont plan on distributing it. I guess MP3s would be bad news here to then no?

why would it be a no-no? it's not illegal to make copies of music or movies for personal use. i don't think anyone is selling or distributing copyrighted material here...are they?

Its supposedly illegal because you break the encryption in order to rip em

some DVDs you don't need to break the encryption on actually. For example I was getting "The Killer" and it was unencrypted.

One, its for personal Use. I'd like to watch this movie on a laptop while on the road. There is no DVD Drive in the laptop.

Two, its an experiment. I'd like to see what my system can do.

just curious, how long does it take you guys to encode a 2 hour movie into divx...under 4 hours for me no matter what bitrate i set it to...

Copying DVDs is actually illegal even for personal use. The MPAA doesn't seem to care that this violates the 1984 Sony Betamax US Supreme Court case that laid the foundation for fair use laws.

well, fortunately for us the MPAA doesn't rule over the Supreme Court. So how is it illegal just because the MPAA doesn't aprove?
