DVD Shrink works very nicely for doing straight conversions from DVD to hdd. Good options for taking out the other language files to make the completed rip smaller. I also use Handbrake but for secondary conversions, such as converting your dvd files to an mpeg for an ipod touch.

Handbrake looked like it took forever to take, and DVD shrink only output to .iso. Any way to get AVIs out of it?

I use FairUseWizard 2 to convert to Xvid.

I haven't tried Handbrake; I usually use some form of DVD Decrypter to trim whatever 'protection' put in place, and then work on the .ISO from my hard drive.

Depends on what format you want them in. Personally I use Any DVD + ImgBurn to create an ISO. From there I use Fairuse Wizard to convert to an Xvid/5.1 AC3 .avi file that is compatible with my other streaming devices such as XBMC and the 360.

There are quite a few out there that are free and useful depending on whether or not you need or want to compress them, many people are now just ripping to ISO or VOB because drive space is so cheap these days. Here are a list of ones I'm using or have used in the past.

For ISO or VOB:
ImgBurn
AnyDvd
DvdShrink + Ripit4me
DvdFab

For encoding the DVD to other formats:
Fairuse Wizard
DvdFab
handbrake
Ripbot - for blu-ray or HD DVD conversions
MakeMKV - still in beta but looks decent

You can rip the dvd VOB files using DVD Shrink. With those files, you can then use handbrake to convert to avi. Converting full length video files takes a little while...be patient.

err... you don't rip with handbrake or dvdshrink, they only work if the protections are old or not there.
you rip using dvdfab or slysoft stuff.
handbrake is for encoding off the drive.
dvdshrink outputs to videots folders as well
handbrake mkv h264 constant quality rate high profile is best if you wish to encode. preserves as much quality as possible in the least spacepossible. and lets you use multiple steams and such.
