My sister wants to take some clips from her DVD movies and make some kind of highlight compilation DVD. I'd rather not use a capture board or video card with VIVO, but pull the video/audio straight from the DVD onto the hard drive, then edit/author them back to DVD recordable.

My only problem is, I haven't a clue where to begin. lol!

I know what ripping is and I've worked with video files (but not ripped from DVD), so I understand the concepts here. I don't know what apps are good for this kind of thing. Freeware is always good, but she is willing to pay $50 ~ $75 for a good program or two (Ulead, Intervideo, Cyberlink, Avid/Pinnacle, whatever).

Also, for best DVD player compatibility, should we use DVD-R or DVD+R?

TIA for any suggestions.

This is actually much easier than you think. I do it all the time to make demo discs.
All you need is DVDDecrypter or DVDShrink and something like DVDAuthor from Pegasys Inc.

You could use DVDDecrypter to copy the files to your HD and then DVDAuthor to make the clips or,
You can use DVDShrink to cut out the clips you need and then DVDAuthor to put them together with a menu. I normally cut out the whole chapter in DVDShrink because I've seen issues with the audio tracks if you cut it in the middle. Just to be safe I cut the entire chapter and then use DVDAuthor to remove what I don't want.

Cool, thanks. How refined are apps like DVDDecrypter, DVDShrink, and DVDAuthor? I'm going to teach my sister how to do what she wants (after I learn), but she isn't nearly as tech savvy. My concern is that many apps popular among enthusiasts and techies are not as user friendly as those developed for the masses.

If crude means fewer steps, less meddling with advanced features, and still yielding DVD quality results, I'm all for it.

The results would be the same but no menu. If you just want the clips, you can do it all with DVDShrink.

Ok, thanks. I'm not sure if she wants a menu or what. Probably, I would guess. I suppose its time to experiment and see what comes of it. Thanks to both of you.
