Why did they employ region lockout system? I have a few import CD's here and there and they're fun to listen to. I can't see why they're against consumer's watching legally imported DVD video's.

If you legally import it, they're still making money. What's there to lose?

I'm gonna have to ask my mummy and daddy for code free NTSC<-->PAL multistandard DVD player. The question is where do I find such thing?

It needs to be multistandard so I can play PAL and SECAM movies too.

thats where the "evil" part comes in :p

But look out for those region free players, they are going to make it so that movies wont play on those players. Try players that support region 1 and 2, should work better... I hope.

So In japan they can charge 50-70$ for an anime DVD, otherwise they would import the US copys back into japan and everyone would die (at least the MPAA and it's buddys think so)

The evil people in other places could also buy the DVD before it came out in regional theatres robbing "the man" of $10 per ticket

The mafia operates on the basis of dividing territory into exclusive turfs.

That's the model the studios adopted, and they are getting away with it.

What you want is a DVD player which is NOT region free but you can change the region to whatever you need as many times as you like :)

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within won't play on region-free players. Like Mitzi said, you want one that lets you change the region whenever you want.

Requirements:

<$500 USD
built decently with quality comparable to all other name brands
component video outputs
can play NTSC/PAL/SECAM standard discs on NTSC and maybe PAL television set
Can operate in code free as well as selectable code mode that offers all the codes available in the world.
comes with a decent remote

Any idea where I can get that?

The real reason is that the movie studios want to control when to release movies into circulation through different channels on each continent.

Usually, a movie first comes out in theaters in the US, then in Europe, and then in the more backwater continents, such as Africa, Asia, and Australia.

This creates a situation whereby the US DVD is already out while the movie is playing in theaters of other continents. If people from other continents could import the US DVD and play it easily in their homes, they would not bother going to the theaters. That would cut into a very lucrative revenue stream for the movie studios.

However, since refusing to export DVD's would break international trade treaties, the movie studios have decided to break the law using a technological solution. They are currently under investigation for this by the Australian government.

Actually, your not too far off. DVDs in Japan cost around $30-$40 and they never sell it at $10-20 you'll see at Sam's Culb or Walmart or other places. And anime DVDs are a even a bit higher. However, renting is very common place and cheap, you can rent a DVD for one night for about $1.50. And you can rent cds too;)

Unforutnately, not every titles released in the world are available in the USA. Put the reimportation stuff aside, I'd still want a DVD player capable of playing movie titles only released in foreign countries.
