DVD Recorder Question

I want to record some tv shows to dvd for a long trip i have coming up and it would be nice to watch them on a laptop while in route. would a dvd recorder do the trick as i need something i can hookup to my cablebox and output from there. i know its possible to record tv directly from a pc with a capture card, but its too much hassle for me.

Do dvd recorders record stuff as a true dvd or just dump the files in avi format or something?

I seen these portable recording devices by Archos that do something like this, but i have no idea how they work.

Don't really care what format the video is in, long as its decent quality, not hd.

Any help is appreciated.

It may differ from manufacturer to manufacturer, but my DVD recorder records to a standard DVD format. You just have to make sure to finalize the compilation in the recorder before you try and play it on a standard DVD player. I believe mine is a magnavox...I got it on sale at walmart for around $55 a couple of months ago and it's worked great!

picked up a phiips DVDR3475 dvd-recorder, finally got it setup, able to record normal broadcatst like cnn without a problem, trying to record a movie channel like hbo doesn't work, getting a error code.

found this unit that supposedly will let me copy protected video content, the unit only works with svideo - not hdml cables.
