DVD Recordable Discs Have Shorter Lifespans Compared to CD-R

Memorex, a manufacturer of DVD recordable discs, has openly admitted that DVD recordable discs are far more sensitive to humidity than CD-R discs in environmental tests, in its whitepaper on lifetime expectations on optical discs, dated March 2006. This means that DVD recordable discs have a much shorter lifespan compared to CD-R discs.

Dude, when your username bears a striking resemblance to your post it makes it really obvious that you signed up just to post that and nobody will listen to you, notwithstanding the whole 6 posts you made before this thread.

Dear All,

This is part of my effort to bring the issues of DVD recordable disc degradation/deterioration to the knowledge of everyone in the world.

I have started off the effort in April of 2005 and it has been almost a year now. Since that date, I have amassed a considerable amount of information, from results of my own testing, to reports of DVD recordable disc failures by other end users, research studies by independent laboratories, foreign magazines, press and media. All of the information could be found in the Central Database.

There is so much information in it that you could practically call it a database.

Sadly, the majority of the DVD recordable discs on the market are not very reliable or durable. The lifespan or longevity of these discs after burning is typically 2-3 years. In fact, this problem is so critical that it has warranted research studies by the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the Library of Congress. NIST has been working with the industry and the user community to develop a standard methodology for determining archival quality grade discs. Due to this effort by the NIST and the Library of Congress, some manufacturers have released Archival Grade DVD Recordable Discs recently, though such discs are still unproven.

Hence, please think twice before entrusting any important data to DVD recordable discs, and do have secondary backups if possible. DVD recordable discs need special care. Solving humidity problems will go a long way into prolonging the lifespan of your DVD recordable discs and your important data. I have read about how couples lost their wedding videos on DVD and it costs a few thousand dollars to partially recover the video.

I hope this information is useful to everybody.

I do have a previous thread which I started quite a long time ago. However, it seems that the thread is no longer there. I have used the search function and search by Author: longevityfreak, but the thread could not be found.

Gotta search the archives dude: http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...hreadid=1705211&enterthread=y&arctab=y

Could you tell me what parameters you typed in the Search function form to enable you to find this thread in the archived?

Thank you.

Maybe can append the archived thread to this new thread and have the old archived thread removed so that there will not be a redundancy in threads.

In a way you are kind of new here, so it could be forgiven.

HOWEVER, I have been wanting to post this for a long time. I even saved it to a text file so I could word it just right. Now seems as good a time as any.

All right folks, for the last time:

Off Topic is NOT a miscellaneous forum. It is a forum for threads that could not possibly fit in any of the other forum topics we already have set up on Anandtech.

We have too many people flooding OT and talking about computer stuff.
ANYTHING computer related can fit into at least one of the other catergories, maybe even two. Thats why we have such variety, its a computer enthusiast website.

There was an additional paragraph on Politics and news, but it doesnt apply here.

I apologize for my inability to find the old thread which I posted 1 year ago. I hope nobody is irritated to find a new thread and an old thread in the archived.

I posted this to let everyone know that a manufacturer has finally admitted the problems with DVD-R discs.

I hope that the information here is useful to everybody.

Thank you!

I have looked at the categories on the left, but my topic doesn't fit into those categories. That's why I posted in off-topic.

General Hardware would have been much more accepting.
Anything thats not inside the computer is considered a peripheral, that forum also would have been better.
You could try highly technical but only if you had stated your own opinion as to why the discs are the way they are, then you'd need to back it up with lots of quotes from around the web.
(The Highly Technical regulars are more anal than us.) ;)

I have a lot of references to research papers by independent laboratories, news/magazine articles, consumer reports, and whitepapers.

Would you all shut the fsck up?

The guy is trying to do us a favor by spreading information. If YOU all don't care that your DVD-R's are going to be worthless in a couple of years, then you should just stay out of the thread in the first place.

Continue, longevityfreak. Your knowledge is welcome here.

Exactly. It's not like he's hawking a particular brand. If he'd, for example, said "DVDRs die quickly, but with new OMFGL33T technology, Brand X is extra long lasting" then toast him. :p

But that said, TY FTW. :)

Thanks longevityfreak, I didn't know that, something I'll have to keep in mind when I'm thinking about cheaping out on DVD-+R purchases :p

Damn straight they do, if you look hard enough you can still find the Fujifilm CD-Rs that are TY. AFAIK, as of late, they've switched to CMC (like Memorex) but if you buy a spindle that either has the blue packaging or contains the colored CDs (5x10 or 50 spindle) you can still get TY media dirt cheap. I haven't been able to figure out who rebrands their DVDs from TY though :(.
