DVD-R Speed Question

I have a panasonic VHS/DVD burner combo (DMR-E75V) hooked up to my tv, and have the following question/concern about DVD-R media:

The recorder is 4X, and the previous media I'd used was panasonic 1x-4x DVD-R. Today, however, I had to purchase 1x-8x DVD-R (also panasonic). I noticed, while browsing, that the 16X DVD-R's put out by other companies had a note that a firmware upgrade to home recorders may be required to burn to those discs (obviously no speed increase, just to be able to burn) - does anyone know if this is also a requirement with the 1x-8x DVD-R? What would happen if a firmware upgrade were required and I didn't do it? etc etc. I'd prefer not to go through a firmware upgrade now, but also would prefer not to damage my recorder

The media states that "this disc is in conformity with the DVD-R for general version 2.1 4x-speed DVD-R revision 1.0 standard/8x speed dvd-r revision 3.0 standard and is capable of recording at 1-8x speed" - should that give me the reassurance I need?

Sorry if this is a double post - I searched a bit, but admittedly am not up to date on DVD-R media.

When you put media in the burner, it reads a code that explains who made the disk and its capabilities. If the code is meaningless to the drive, it may default to a slower recording speed, or it may not recognize the disk as usable. A firmware update will allow the drive to recognize media codes introduced after its manufacture.
