Went back and got one of the BLxxxx one (returned) at the Campbell store, and after opening it, it states DVR-105 on the drive and states Pioneer.

While I was there (around 3-4pm), the Campbell, CA (near San jose) store still has 8 left, in which I know there is still one of them starts with BLxxx (4x DVR 105), but it's also returned mechandise.

The one I bought (Serial number: BGDxxxx) was brand new sealed. The ones I saw with the BLD are returned, not refurbished drive, and it's pretty common for frys to rebadge their returns and sell it at new price.

So was yours (BGDxxxx) a Pioneer DVR-105? Also, are your saying that the ones that have no plastic seal are equivalent to an open box item as opposed to refurbished? Lastly, does anyone know for sure that Pioneer DVR-105s are 4x?

I went to City of Industry and they are definately ringing up at $249.90 in Southern California. I didn't think to have them call Northern CA for a pricematch though (since Fry's is so damn stingy I didn't even think they would).

Although the drives they had out were all returns and only one started with "BL."

Makes me wonder how many of those were unsuccessful firmware updates. There is nothing worse than having to stand in a Fry's return line!

i just upgrade my firmware succesfully. the specs on the 105 is the same as the a05 just oem vs retail and yes they burn at 4x if you have the correct media.

Just installed my drive - it works great, not tried burning yet, but reads CD-R's and DVD's fine. Nero 5.5.10.7b, InstantCopy7 and RecordNow Max 4.5 recognise it as a 4x drive.

Has 1.00 firmware - apparently this is the best firmware for cheap media - but 1.21 has faster reading speed....?

Very satisfied customer, especially if I get the rebate.

Now waiting for DVD Decrypted to rip my test movie before running it through IFOedit and DVD2one.

EDIT: the box had no plastic wrap on it, but did have 2 of those really tough ribbon things on - Swiss Army Knife took care of them though! :)

My (BGDxxxx) was a Pioneer DVR 104 /2 and I grabbed another one, (BLDxxx), and that one is a Pioneer DVR105.

99% of the time, when it's a return, they will have a sticker that state's it's a return and contains fry's warrantee info for this product, + return date and store number. Actually, often times, they will shrink wrap it again to make it look better. So, the plastic seal does't make much of a difference. Try look for that return sticker, and it will tell you if it's a return.

Yes, Pioneer PVR-105 are 4x. (104 = 2x)

I think the Pioneer 105/A05 do not write to cheap media very well, which may be the cause for the high return rate. Anyone know if the newer firmware corrects this problem?

The rebate goes to Best Cost (so it's a MIR, but states only for Fry's and outpost purchase), goes to Santa Ana, CA and must be postmarked 15 days after purchase. Valid date is 2/21 to 2/25.

There's a Fry's near the Oakland Coliseum????? Since when???

I was at the Fremont store tonite, and they had a shelf of nothing...all the Best Cost DVD-R/RWs were gone. Shelf tag showed $129 after rebate.

I didn't need it afterall, as my drive from Staples ends up costing me only $135 AR. I'm happy with that.

Hey guys,
Since the label is badly printed, does that mean the rebate might not be as good?
Also any reviews on this drive please. Is it + or -, and which one is better and why please? I am not familiar with it.
Thanks.

This drive is -.. There is no real better, they are just 2 different formats.. It used to be that + was more compatable but recently more dvd players have been compatable with - (but both of them are roughly compatable with the same number)... + is Sony's format, - is Pioneers.. The main reason people choose - over + is that the media is still about 1/3rd as expensive as +.

I bought the Cendyne dvd-r drive at frys on Sat. Feb. 22nd for $197 after $50 rebate. Since this is during the rebate period for the Best Coast drive can I send off their $70 rebate instead of sending off the $50 Cendyne rebate that I got at the register?

This seems like it might work since Cendyne might be Best Coast.

I don't get it, when Officemax sells a cendyne for $150 people go mad crazy about it even though it happens every week.. Fry's sells this one for $129 and it basically gets no responces
I think it has something to do with the Mystique!:D:D:D

Cheetah,
This is a very hot post. If MysticMan1 had not seen to this last week for some of us, I'd be all over this.

Interesting, but it's not the end of the world. It could have a major influence on which way things turn to in the future tho'...

BTW, I just picked up the last Best Cost at the Fry's in Sacramento. AO4.:( Back I go.

Well, not to start another DVD + / - discussion here, but if you consider that by the time one of the standard becomes dominant and the other becoming obsolete, DVD burners are very likely be under $100 or even around $50-80, and it's probably time to buy another one anyways.

That being said, for $130, I think this is a hot hot deal (assuming you find a 4x 105). Just think, by the time when(if) DVD-R does become obsolete (I would assume it will at least be around for another year or two), you have certainly burned at least $130 worth of DVDs by then, and recap your investment.
