Got an plextor 8X DVD burner on the way and am trying to do my homework on the media. Seems + or - "R" has an 85% or better chance of playing in my set top player, with the edge going to -R. It seems + or - "RW" both come in at about 75%. Given that a 50 spindle of Ritek R or RW at Newegg cost about the same, I am wondering why not just go for "RW"'s and not burn any coasters plus have the ability to write over them? Am I missing something? Is it just the %'s?

These are the things I want to do:
- Burn home movies
- Backup DVD's with DVD Shrink/Nero of EZCD (have not decided which I will go with)
- Backup mp3's, pics and other data.

I also may want to play the backups on a PS2.

What do you think?

RW's apparently don't play in set top DVD players. if you want to make movies and stuff, just buy the R's, and use the RW's for data backup, because you can re-write to them.

I honestly don't think they are the same price, either you read it wrong, or it's at typo.. RW's from what i have seen are usually 2-3x the price of regular R's. I can't understand how they could be the same price...
for most of the stuff you will be doing.. single writables will be best.

for backup.. buy a 5 pack of RW's and do your mp3's and data on those :)

Yep, thanks I know, but as nice as 8X is going to be, I have no problem with 4X if RW's will work. At least until I get the hang of burning DVD's.

I have backed up several to +rw and all but 1 worked on 3 different dvd players. 1 cyberhome and 2 different models of Apex. Still new to all this, but learning slowly.
