I'm looking to buy one of these technologies. Which one would you recommend? I like DVD+R because it is a little faster than DVD-R. But I'm not sure about compatibility.

There aren't any DVD+R drives on the market, so right now the question is kinda moot. Until they come out (next month?) nobody will know about compatibility.

I'm wondering personally want to know what DVD+RW offers me over DVD-RW, since my main purpose with DVD is secondary data backup. My primary backup is currently a second hard drive, and I could fit what I really need to backup on about 8 DVD-/+RWs. It does seem to me that DVD-RAM is the most flexible DVD data format, but I wouldn't get a DVD-RAM drive unless it supports DVD-R as well (like the Panasonic ones). Unfortunately, it seems the DVD-RAM/R drives cost almost as much as DVD-RW drives anyway, but with far less support, and more expensive media.

DVD+R is already shipping. HP DVD200i is on sale for $499.
Will be using for video.

DVD-R can do 2x recording, DVD+R can do 2.4x recording. recording cd is faster too.

but DVD-R is only $399 retail, $365 oem.

Hmmm... It's seems you're correct. People have just gotten their first 200i's last week. Nobody around here has it in stock though.

The statement still applies though: Nobody really knows the DVD+R compatibility yet. Time will tell. One worrisome post: Well I burned the +R and it would not play in the Apex or in a bog standard DVD-ROM that I have in another PC. The +RW played in the DVD-ROM. However, there are still authoring issues that need to be sorted out before comments can be accepted with any real validity.

I'm gonna just wait I think. BTW, Sony just announced a DVD-RW/DVD+RW combo drive.
