DVD-R media now $1.98

Pretty good price, I think I've seen that price before, but never for only 25 discs, good deal. What is the shipping and how reputable is this site? Also anyone know deals on DVD burners? That's what most of us here (me included) REALLY want.

that is _Very_Cheap_Media..

If you plan on using the DVD for more than a year and care about it flaking / falling apart / sucking --- spend $4-5/pop on Apple DVD media

Apple's is the best out there.

I disagree completely that Apple DVD-R media is the best . Apple gets their DVD-R media from OEMs just like everyone else that private labels their own media. In fact they use Verbatim as their OEM. You can purchase Verbatim OEM media for about $2.50 a disc in 50+ quantities which is half the price of the exact same media that is Apple logo. Justr like CD media, there are manufacturers who producse lesser quality DVD media, but the longevity of any media is more closely related to the environment that is is used and stored than the actual manufacturing OEM.

It never ceases to amaze me have many ignorats are "apple washed" and willing to pay 2-3 prices for inferior hardware and software just becase of slick marketing.

Every manufacturer does also make different quality levels of discs. Since Apple is such a quality focused company, I feel quite sure that their discs are the top-of-the-line media being produced by whomever they are sourcing them from. An example of this would be how most set-top DVD players, up until recently, could play commercial VCDs but not burned ones. Why, because the commercial ones were mastered onto higher quality/higher reflectivity discs than were available for consumer burning. So, when you are buying in volume, you definitely can getter better quality media made for you even than the same manufacturer is making available under their own name.

Anyway, I think most people would agree that most of the time you get what you pay for. And one last example, Apple computers have a much lower average failure rate and mean-time between failure rate than other computers. They really are very quality focused.

wrong!

DVD player cannot play VCD format on a burned CDR because it is a CDR. It is not about the quality. Massed produced VCDs and CD-R burned VCD are different media!

Well could that be because apple holds the whopping 5% of the market and because apple computers are not very customizable(you cant pick that component and this component and this sound card and that video card and whooptie do -- an apple). Its like saying playstation has lower failure rate than other "computers". Its apples and oranges as far as Im concerned...

GetReal: Where can you purchase Verbatim DVD-R (the ones that are OEM of the Apple DVD-R) for $2.50 in 50+ quantities? Any good reliable, trustworthy stores out there that carry them? Let me know please. Thanks! 😀

i hear that if you use CDRW media instead of stock CDR media, it works in most DVD players. haven't tried out myself yet though.

Umm, I have 114 movies in SVCD format burned to CDR's that play fine on my 5 dvd players.

what he meant is that early dvds could not play CDR copies of VideoCD not because those CDRs were a low quality media, but because CDR is a different media all together from a factory-pressed VideoCD and those early DVD players did not support CDR media....

Also it is quite likely that the early DVD players did not have the ability to read VCD movies. Much as even now some DVD players lack the ability to playback MP3's or newer video compression types ( SVCD 1.0, 2.0 Divx, etc)

apple media is oem pioneer. pioneer has a firmware issue that will only burn 2x on pioneer discs ... it burns 2x on apple discs without a problem.

The DVD players couldn't play cdr's because the laser used to read DVD's is a different wavelength that the one used to read cdr's. Read about it more HERE. It has nothing to do with the quality of the disks.

I've found this ot be the case with my toshiba and panasonic DVD players with every brand of CD-RW media. Niether player will play CDR media. It has to do with the laser used to read the information.

Not true about panasonic today.
My DVD-RP56 will play CD-R and CD-RW.
It will play vcd, svcd, even out of spec ones.
It plays just about everything I throw at it.

I wasn't commenting on all panasonic and toshiba players...only that I had one of each and neither would read CDR's but both would read CDRW. I believe the players that read CDR discs use two lasers instead of just one.

I wanna know too, if it's a secret then PM me 😉
My PS2 hates crappy media (and man, the spindle I got from meritline had one of the worst compatibility rates i've ever seen -- doesn't boot in my PS2, and movies burned to it start skipping after ~30mins on my pioneer 525 which normally plays anything)

Well, if it is wrong, then it isn't me that's wrong but the DVD player manufacturer's because that is where I got the info. To clarify a little more, many earlier players (i.e. 2000 and earlier) stated that they were VCD compatible. But it turned out that practically all of them from that time would only play commercially available VCDs, not ones burned yourself. And the statements I read on the manufacturer's sites stated that this was because the commercial ones used higher quality/higher reflectivity media than consumers could purchase to burn their own. "higher quality/higher reflectivity" is EXACTLY what I stated the first time yet some of you ignored the relectivity portion and focused solely on quality. Nevertheless, I claim to be no computer media engineer. I just know that this is what the DVD player makers were stating as the reason.
