DVD-R media for my NEC 2510A

Hey, I just bought a NEC 2510A from Newegg. I will be using it to backup movies so I think I have decided on the DVD-R (even though I hear that there isn't a huge difference between + and -). I was wondering if anyone knows of brands of DVD-R 8x media that will work for sure with this drive? Does anyone already have one and know of good media (preferably cheap too!) Thanks

Good question freshfish, given the popularity of this media. What is the best brand of lowcost media for fast 8x recording with this drive (for me I would like to know - or + just what is best)

You may want to wait till 8x DVD-/+Rs & DLs become more affordable, unless you absolutely need that speed.

I don't know what it's like in the states, but it's pretty much impossible to find 8x media here in Canada for a reasonable price.

I just got this burner too. Is there any way you can burn 4x media at 8x with this drive?

Also, is there a way i can make sure I can burn at 8x? Like i have the 2510A burner but Nero doesnt allow me to select anything above 4x and there are no indicators that 8x is my max speed.

Installed my new 2510a the other day but haven't tried to burn anything yet. Week ago I picked up a spindle of 25 unmarked 8x DVD+R ($29), not too bad, I guess for 8x media. I really like the vendor so I figure they like and will stand by what they sell.

What I'm wondering is if I should flash new firmware. I'm not terribly concerned about region free, but I'd like to remove Rip Lock, which they say reduces rip speeds to 2x. What I've read suggests that the Rip Lock will be in effect UNLESS you flash. There's 3 versions of firmware posted at http://tdb.rpc1.org/#ND2510A, and it doesn't suggest which to use, and each version contains 3 different .BIN you can flash, being "original" FW, Rip Lock removed and Riplock removed & region free (RPC1).

I'd like some feedback from others with the 2510a before messing with any of this firmware, however. I'm really a DVD burning newbie and figure I shouldn't jump into this stuff without having a good look.

Yes, Firmware is another topic I am confused on, so i second Muse's request for some help with that.

I got a pack of 5 8x Memorex DVD-R's for ~15 at Office Max. That's not too horribly priced...but I have no clue if they will work in my DVD player or burn well in my 2510A. I want to buy a big spindle but I need to be absolutely sure b4 I do that.

I did check out Newegg's media, but that doesn't really help me decide which brand I should get. They have some nice looking prices though.

BTW, I can't wait for DL!!!

Edit: sorry for the double post...dial up internet has tricked me again 😱

FreshFish, from my personal experience, [I do own an 8X Drive] if you're looking for the best compatibility across the board between DVD players in your home, not just your computer, burn your DVDs at 2.4X 🙂

As for blank media, Imation gets my vote 🙂

That may have been the case at one time, but it really isn't any longer. I have 4X Ritek +R's that play fine in my two set top DVD players, as well as my neighbors el-cheapo Apex, whether I burn them @ 4X, 6X, or 8X...

Not that I discount your opinion Insane3D, but some friends that I know that use console video systems such as older first generation PS2's & XBoxes can't read DVD media burnt at faster speeds 😕

Haha, my main DVD player (other than my DVD-ROM ofcoarse) is a first generation PS2, therefore I think I may try out your advice and burn at slow speeds....it's unfortunate really...maybe I will try 4x and see what happens. Thanks!

Ahh, well I can't speak for that, I am also talking about +R media, so maybe that's different. At least in the DVD players I've tried, the burn speed has not been a factor. Is this all with a certain burner and/or media? I would imagine el-cheapo media might need to be burnt @ slower speeds.

🙂

I am using PRODISC 8X DVD-R with great success on the NEC 2510a. Got 50 DVDs for $29 plus shipping from www.supermediastore.com. They work equally well with the original 2.15 firmware or the newer hacked 2.06 firmware.😀

I just switched over to Ritek DVDrs, but I've been using Memorex for the past year with great results. I prefer +R discs because the movies work on my Playstation 2 and home DVD player.

I have an XBox 1.0 (literally got it two days before it hit shelves) and it has the finicky brand drive in it and it still reads the DVD-R's I burned at 6X (they were 4X sony discs) just fine....anything besides DVD-R however, doesnt work for squat 🙂

Hi, I recently bought an NEC 2510a and had been wondering which 8X media to use with it as well. I can tell you what NOT to use. Just for the heck of it, I went to ecost.com and picked up a 25-spindle of their 8X Promedia (Lead Data) DVD+R disks, which cost around $12 for the spindle after mail-in rebate. Now, from what I've heard, these disks are no different than Sony disks and are in fact manufactured for Sony by Lead Data.

Sadly, even though these disks are rated for 8X, neither Nero 6 or Roxio Easy Media Creator 7 coupled with my 2510a have been able to write to these disks any faster than 4X. Neither program offers an option to even select 8X with this media.

At first, I thought maybe updating the firmware would allow my 2510a to write to these disks at 8X like they are designed to be written to, so I went ahead and updated the firmware from 2.15 (which is what it came with) to 2.16... but still no dice. My burner still won't write to this brand of media any faster than 4X, no matter which burning program I use. So based on this experience, I would have to advise anyone wishing to burn at 8X to stay away from Promedia/Lead Data disks. However, when burned at 4X these disks seem to play back well on the Panasonic DVD-F85 player which I have connected to my TV... although this particular player was designed with DVD+/-R disk playback in mind, so I can't exactly vouch as to how well the disks would play back on slightly older DVD players

In reading, someone else in this forum had mentioned that they use their 2510a along with Prodisc 8X DVD-R disks and have had great success, so I think that I will give Prodisc a try once I use up this spindle.
