<< I'm not surprised with the price drop of DVD-R since it is not compatible with most DVD player or DVD-ROM drive, while the new DVD+RW is. >>

LOL, wow, nothing beats a long day of work than coming home and finding this little gem. Thanks McDull, havn't laughed this hard in a long while. :-D

Anywho, good deal. Might have to check it out, however I've been sticking with the Apple discs with flawless results.

Actually, DVD+RW media is 6-7 bucks a pop, not "over $10"... still not great, but right on target with dvd-rw. Newegg has a generic DVD+RW brand for $5, never tried them so I'm not including them. Second, I have a PS2, and guess what? It reads my DVD+RW discs fine, as do all 4 of my set top players.

If you're gonna bash DVD+RW, please don't spout lies about it...

if what you're saying is true, then you're probably one of the few (and i mean FEW) that can play dvd+rw on your ps2...I had no such luck with my dvd+rw drive (hp100i), and the results have been confirmed hundreds if not thousands of times on ps2 irc channels/forums...

Maybe the reason I can play them on my PS2 is that I just recently got mine, about 3 weeks back. Perhaps Sony has changed cd drives with all of the recent failures? Regardless, mine DOES read my dvd+rw discs fine, I guess ymmv

Nobody's "bashing" DVD+RW, in fact this fairly simple thread seeems to be turning into a -/+ flamewar. While I personally could care less which of the two technologies Microsoft 'supports', I am interested in +RW player support. So, would you be so kind as to let me know the four consumer players you own and reliability of +RW in PS2? Also, out of curiosity, did you buy some or all of the players after you bought the drive or did you buy the drive and all your home equipment happened to play DVD+RW?

Thanks

Well, I see where this is going, but if anyone wants to ask me questions about my DVD+RW compatibility and all that, please PM me so I don't have to waste space here, thank you much

You could have answered the question, instead you did waste space (pretty much like this post). I don't think ORfoo (or myself) is trying to flame you or anything, he just wants some good info (that you failed to provide). This is a friendly discussion board, and all opinions and facts are wanted, and most are respected. It may not seem that way at times, but everyone wants their stuff to be the best. Right now I'm still torn over which format I should get. I was leaning towards DVD-R (for the PS2 compatability) but if your findings are true then I may jump on the DVD+RW bandwagon. Hopefully one day there will be a drive that supports both formats.

First off, I agree entirely with Shippy.

Secondly, I faced that debate between -/+ myself. I eventually opted for the "-" (A03... then the A04 from tax refunds :-D). I'm extremely pleased with my purchase. (The PS2 compatibility was a perk, I already have all my 80+ games backuped already....) I have made several videos for clients, and they've all come back with positive results on their DVD players, which to me, is the whole reason worth having a burner in the first place -- to watch your hard work on your settop DVD player.

That's where this debate ends in my mind. At least for right now. Things may change.

Shippy: The reason I didn;t want to take up room on here was because this is the hot deals forum, not the general hardware forum where a debate like this one belongs... That post wasn't meant to be hostile, it was an honest offer...

ANYWAYS, since everyone seems to be up for a good debate, I'll see what I can do to lay down some info on the DVD+RW in my home. Remember, YMMV, and these are just my findings.

First off, you can find Verbatim DVD+RW discs at www.provantage.com for $6, which is pretty fair I think seeing as how their cd-rs have always been top notch and thus far I've had no problems with the dvd discs either. NewEgg has Optio(I think?) discs for $5, but I've never heard of the name brand before, and much of what I've been burning has been backups that I'd like to not have fall apart on me.

Second, the units in my home were all purchased before I got the drive. The drive, BTW, is the HP100i. My settop players include the Pioneer DV333 and DV535, a Sony DVP S345 and my grandparents own an RCA player of some sort, I'm not sure the exact model. I've also tried putting a video from my 'rents digital camcorder onto a disc and it worked fine in my PS2, although like I said I have a newer machine so the innerds might be different.

Software that comes with the burner is flaky at best, much like any of the drives you'd get, + or -. Record time for a whole DVD is around 25 minutes or so, roughly a bit faster then half the time it takes to write a DVD-rw disc, although newer -rw drives support 2x on certified media.

Finally, and I have no clue how this works, but HP has started releasing "Compatability packs", which burn the dvd slightly differently so that you can make once incompatible players play the discs. Again, I have no idea how this works, and right now there are only around ten more confirmed drives from this process, but perhaps in time we will see more and more get added, and maybe even individuals will be able to target specific players.

As to why I chose +RW, there are two reasons. First, I got the drive for $75 as an incentive through work, and I couldn't pass that up;) , second I got it to be future proof. Although -rw has better compatability now, with the money backing +rw regardless of it's inferior it will eventually win. That means +rw would become standard and therefore all new players would support dvd+rw. Also, with money backing it, disc prices should drop dramaticly, already down to $5 a pop, which isn't too bad when you really think about it.

Hope this helps guys, no hard feelings... again, if anyone wants to PM me, feel free to!

Daaaaaamn, $75? I don't blame you either. That in itself is a reason for you to support +RW. Hell, if I had the chance, I'd probably be doing BOTH right now....

Just as an additional note, the new 200i with +R support is supposed to be shipping this month. And as a previous poster mentioned, if you own a 100i, you can return it and upgrade for $99.

All $75 flukes aside, these drives are a pretty expensive gamble right now. I bet if one company dropped their drive down into the CD-RW pricerange, they'd become THE standard real fast. HEHE.

SpongeBob, better let your friend know he can NOT upgrade his Dell dvd+rw drive as the upgrade drive deal is only for RETAIL drives and does not support OEM drives.

drewshin - there was actually another thread that ended up with a question like that one. I tried doing that exactly. I burned a DVD-R full of MP3's and tried playing it in my Panasonic DVDRP56 set top player which plays mp3 files but it could not read the disk. Your mileage may vary with different vendors however but for me, it didn't work unfortunately. No big deal i suppose since I already have a Turtle Beach Audiotron sitting at home playing mp3's off the network. Nice idea though

The branded DVD-Rs for $1.58 are out of stock, but they have non-branded for the same price now in stock. I have had bad luck with non-branded CDRs flaking, so you may want to slap a label on these.

Edit: They also have DVD-RW for $$1.98. DVD+RW can't touch dat!

I so want a deal on a cheap a04. Is the Pioneer DVR-104 really the same drive as the retailers say on Pricewatch? Also, anyone placed a DVD-RW into a firewire enclosure with success? I'd like to be able to buy one drive and use it on my PC and Mac.
