GoGoCity has the Panasonic LF-D311 DVD-RAM/DVD Recordable IDE drive for $299. Shipping's $12. I promised myself I would wait till they got under $300, and here they are (sort of). But how much will they getter better and cheaper in the next six months?

The Pioneer A04 has burn-proof or some variant of that. Damn, these things were dropping so fast a couple of months ago, but now it seems that they're stuck at $350. I just know that I'm going to be kicking myself in 5 years when the latest, greatest 32x DVD-RW's cost $85 from Lite-On and I'm reminisicing about the days when I paid $350 for a 2x. Why doesn't Lite-On sell DVD Burners?

The longer you wait the more features you will get for cheaper. That's always the way it is in the computer market (except for volatile markets like RAM). I bought a 1.2 tbird not terribly long ago when the 1.3 was the best for like $260, now you can get a 1700+ for $100. Now with the DVD market, it's taken a while to get to $300, but it will keep going down, especially since they come out with faster and more capacity drives all the drive (keep in mind you will typically be writing 4.7 gig a side or something like that, depends on the standard).

I bought a 4x Yamaha CD-RW in '97 for $550 but that's the price you gotta pay for leading edge technology :disgust:

The media cost is what's holding me back. When I can get a 50 pack of DVD-R's for a reasonable price ($20 or less) I'll buy one.

z80: you goota remember that dvd's hold around 7 times more than cd's. if you're buying cd's for a quarter apiece, then dvd's should go for $1.75. you can get them at this price at cd-recordable.com. at least that 's the way i justify it... :)

i know that not all set-top dvd players can play DVD-R's, but can all computer DVD-ROM's read DVD-R's as data disks?

It seems like they've been on order forever and my local vendors say it's discontinued. The current model is the LF-D321. I've seen this newer model one on sale for $380 with software.
