dvd-r 4x vs 8x burns

Why do 4x only takes 5min longer then 8x? Theoritically speaking 8x takes 9min30sec instead of 7min30sec that it is rated for. 8x always cost twice as much but not twice as fast so it is a ripoff

The "burning the data" part takes less time (should be close to half as much). There are other steps to the process (finalizing the disk, for instance) that take a constant amount of time no matter how fast the burner is. As the burn time gets shorter, this stuff takes a bigger percentage of the overall time, which reduces the impact of faster burner speeds somewhat. It's the same way with CD-Rs.
