btw DVD+R disks are now very cheap and the DVD+R and DVD+RW does alot things the other formats don't and some things faster.

Also there is a bitset utility to change the bit type DVD drives recognize these disks to DVD-ROM which greatly increases their readibility in different DVD drives for playback of video or reading of data or whatever is on the disk.

Like what? Just for comparison, the last batch of dvdr's I bought I paid $1.28 each and the rw's $1.85 each. This is for my Pioneer A03.

Sepen: where? :)

Also what program(s) do you use to make 1:1 backups for dvds that are under 4.7 gigs?

SirDante, if you want to make 1:1 backups you need to extract the data to your hard drive using either smartripper or DVDDecrypter. Then you can use Nero 5.5.8.0 or higher to burn the new DVD. If you need to remove some info to make the movie fit. Use the same tools above and IfoEdit, then Nero.

thanks. that's exactly what i did. the dvd-r played in my a03 using powerdvd fine. but my dvd drive and set top wouldn't read it. i'm guessing due to the generic media.

SirDante - doom9.net has all the programs and guides you could want - check it out. The forums there are a great place for asking questions - sometimes, people blame the generic media for no good reason. I picked myself up an Apex 1200 for $60, because it plays EVERYTHING. Then, I can tell for sure when it was the generic media, and when it was a bad directory structure, missing files, bad burn, etc. - the DVD format isn't as stable as CD, and things like missing files, folders, even having folder names not in all caps will cause disks to not work in some set-top boxes.

As for the DVD+R/RW - those in the market for a new drive should note the incredible price difference (and availability) between DVD-R ($1.25 a disk and falling) and DVD+R ($3.86 and a hot deal).

and what are you talking about here???

Also there is a bitset utility to change the bit type DVD drives recognize these disks to DVD-ROM which greatly increases their readibility in different DVD drives for playback of video or reading of data or whatever is on the disk.

Most DVD+RW drives if not all have a great feature that can be used to greatly increase the number of drives they can be read in. It's a bitset utility to write a different bitset code to the disk so its recoginzed as a Dvd-rom disk. As you probably know that is the original format pretty much so it helps tremendously. I write cd+rw disks and use them in old dvd-rom drives constantly.

HP packages a utility with their new drive openly documenting it and how to use.

A technical explanation if you want it is at this site:
