dvd question...again

Yo!
I am trying to decide what dvd drives to buy but i think dvds have region codings.. so will the drives be able to read them all?( i am eyeing for the pioneer drives or sony ones, samsung if they are available)

Thanks

Aren't all the ones in the US legally have to be locked to region 1? And if you change them, they can only be changed a number of times before they lock?

This page has firmware hacks for many drives to make the drive play all region disc's. I bought my Creative 12x drive just because there was firmware hack available for it and it worked, dont have to pay attention to the region codes anymore.

But remember, as the site says:

This page is only for advanced users, bad flashing could destroy your drive definitively.
Read carrefully the installation notes of your firmware upgrade.

At your own risk!!!!

No it's not difficult. Have you ever flashed your bios? It's the same thing... it's easy, but there's always the risk that the drive get's fukt and getting it replaced under guarantee might be a problem because you broke it with more-or-less illegal firmware hack.

However, I haven't personally known anyone who would have destroyed their drive by flashing it, dunno what's that worth tho...

The decision is your's...

Just be careful.. and good luck.

Btw, backup the original firmware - or get the latest official firmware from the manufacturer first. If something goes wrong, first thing is to try to re-flash the original firmware.
