DVD players playing - vs + burned DVDs

This is referring to stand along DVD players, NOT ones in computers.....

I was under the impression that if a DVD player could play burned DVDs, that it could play DVD-R or DVD+R DVDs without any difference and that the burner was what determined what media to use. I was recently told that certain DVD players can only play the +r media and other certain players could only play the -r media.

Is this true? My old Sony can play any DVDs I put in there and I thought all DVD players could read either kind.

Just want to get my facts straight.

I still have no idea what the difference between +/- are. All the information I have is that they are different standards introduced by different companies, and that + is catching on more rapidly?

IIRC, anyways.
