does anyone know if all dvd players work with big screen tv's.i have a 61 inch sony not digital and looking
for a good dvd player i can use with it.
thanks mike

The new Sony DVPNS700P progressive scan DVD Player is awesome. Depending on soon you want a DVD Player if you buy it from 800.com before September 26th you can have it for $299 and they'll give you a free 800.com $50 gift certificate (buy some DVD movies) and they'll even throw in free shipping.

Great price on an awesome DVD Player.

As long as your TV has video in jacks of some sort (S-Video, RCA, Component) they all work. A DVD player has to be run directly into either a receiver or the TV itself, not through a VCR. If you run it through a VCR, macrovison will kick in whenever you play a movie and it will be unwatchable.

That player looks kick-ass. I'm looking at getting one quite soon. Will it work with ANY TV with a co-axial input or better?

no, co-axial is not RCA. Co-axial(coax for short) is like what your cable line is. RCA is those 3 wires that are red, white and yellow.
The co-axial connection that is meantioned in that dvd page is for the connection to your home theater receiver for the surround sound.
The DVD player doesn't have a coax connection for your TV though.

Most dvd players today will hook directly into your tv. The viewing quality will be significantly impacted by the type of connect. Considering that you have a 61" tv, I would try for the highest quality possible; at least an "S-type" connection. Some tv's will have the standard "red, white, yellow" connectors which will give you lesser quality connnection. A better type would be one that uses a blue colored connection.

In looking at dvd players that will not be routed through a receiver, make certain that you have decoders inside the dvd player (most will specify which decoder - dts, dolby, ect.). You will also hear about "progressive scan" which requires that you have a high definition tv, or else you won't be able to see the higher performance.

I recently went through the same process for my Toshiba 32"; bought the Toshiba 2715 and also upgraded my receiver to the H&K 111. Hope this helps.

i do have a S video connection but the tv is not digital ,any recommendations on something that will
give me a decent picture or should i wait?the sony that rossman mentioned has progressive scan.

the links I already mentioned will give you some good reviews and basic info. Also consider whether you want a single player or multiple unit; will the primary use be dvd's or are you planning on also using it for music; will the music be cd's or ripped??? The sony's have a good rep for quality playback, but their performance is hit & miss on longevity of the unit; plus many folks complain about their noise. The panasonics offer some excellent units that have good playback and durability. Main reason I went with the toshiba was that I also have a high music usage (the 2715 has performed excellently on both cd's and burned/ripped cd's) and that the HK receiver had both digital and s-video hook-ups, so this unit gave me quite a bit of flexibility and the option to move up to better receivers and tv's. Plus, the price was right (ABC Warehouse for $218 plus they threw in a set of Monster cables).

Panasonic RV31. Best picture you'll get in the price range. They can be found for under $200. I think Costco sells them for $179 or something.

I love mine....ask Viper GTS, I think he owns one too.

Panasonic RV31K/RV31S rocks. 🙂

$165 shipped for mine (from Amazon, courtesy of RossMAN). Glad I finally took the plunge & bought one.

As for the Sony, is your TV progressive scan? If not, is the player capable of putting out a non-progressive scan signal?

I gotta say though the Sony DVPNS700P is one sweet DVD Player, think I'll buy my roommate's Toshiba SD1600 from him. Zoom is a nice feature 😉
