DVD player for home

Yeah yeah yeah, I know it's a boring topic 😀 but I'ld still appreciate some help.

Looking for a good dvd player for the TV. I'll be upgrading my receiver in the near future so I'll be going for a fairly functional unit. The only limitation is my tv which is not HD so progressive scan is wasted. My target price is around $300. Primary use will be for movies and music; very limited MP3 or CD-RW. My tv does have s-video.

So give me your experiences and recommendations. Thanks.

ps. I have been checking forums on dvd's and home stereos but links would also be appreciated.

I have a toshiba 2109 or 3109, whatever one had the dual disk tray. They don't make it anymore, but I've been impressed.

A good many DVD players won't read CDRs, and usually the ones that will are the ones with MP3 playback, which in my experience, always lack in quality and features. A time or two, I've been able to trick mine into reading a CDRW.

I have a Pioneer DV-434. It's under $200 if you have a Costco membership. Everything's been perfect with it so far. It's also compatible with VCD's and DVD-R's if this is important to you.

I think for what you want, the $300 budget is a bit high. Prices have dropped significantly for DVD players.

from my research, a major issue with reading multiple media types is the utilization of 2 lasers. One is dedicated for video while the second if geared toward audio. The DAC (Digital to Analog Converter) will have a big impact here also. Some units even have seperate power supplies for each laser so they can track at different rates if the sync is off.

The Panasonic is one that I hadn't seen yet and it looks like it has many of the features I'm after. I'll research it a bit further. A friend had the Pioneer and returned it 3 times before finally switching; have you worked with their CSR's at all?

keep 'em coming folks, I'm watching.

//presses "play" on his tape recorder...

Panasonic RV31 or Pioneer DV343, leaning towards the Panasonic... Both are cheaper than 300$, at ~200$. IMO it's not worth it to pay more if you're not going for a progressive scan player.

I find that the recommendations from vcdhelp.com deal more with the ability to play different types of media rather than the image quality and stuff like that. Hence the Pioneers being on the top of the most recommended list due to their dual laser design. But it's still a very good guide for seeing what's out there.

Uhm...the Panasonic supports all that stuff too...including MP3 decoding.

kami, stop promoting your DVD player! 😉

hehe, I agree that the Panasonic is better, even though I own a Pioneer DV333 (basically the same as 343, just last year's model). The only thing I don't like about it is it can't play burned SVCD (even though it can play VCDs up to 2500kbit bitrate). The Pioneer works great with SVCD, and that's the format I use now for burning movies. But if you don't care for SVCD, then the Panasonic is a better all around player.

Can't you ignore the DAC on the DVD player if you use an optical or coax digital connection? I didn't pay much attention to that aspect since I knew I would have the optical connection to my receiver so I tried to find a receiver with decent quality.

I have the Panasonic RV30 (something like that) -- been very pleased with it, but I'm not terribly picky. 🙂

I own the Pioneer 343 and it is a geat player, have it paired with a sony trinitron TV and it looks great. Plays anything, VCD's, SVCD's CD-R's anyhting. Picture qualit seems to be better then my buddys toshiba but that could also be beacuse he only has a RCA TV not a sony. I would go with the pioneer, if what sugardaddy said is true and the pan cand do SVCD then its a waste of time.

Go with the cheapest Pioneer you can find... Superb pic quality for the price... Compared it with Sony reference player (~$1000), couldn't tell diff in picture on my Wega... You won't be disappointed...

hmmmmm, may have to reconsider the Pioneers and Panasonics.

In my searching I've also read about "nuon" capability, but only see it randomly scattered in the dvd players. Can anyone fill me on this option???

I think nuon is a Samsung thing. I'm pretty sure it's pretty nice, but might as well go with something that's tried and tested, and just as cheap, such as the pioneer or panasonic.🙂

do they still sell the pioneer 333?
the pioneer 333 and 343 r both made in china, while the pan rv31 is made in japan, and electronics made in japan tend to last longer than those that r made in china. if u want a cheap dvd player, i would go for the apex 660 or the 500W.

I'd suggest you get a Pioneer player which let's you plug in an optical cable (Digital). Your amp should also have support for it though... Which amp do u have? I use the Optical Fibre cables for my music set-up & the quality is excellent. Simply amazing. There are noticable differences with normal cables & the fiber optic digital ones.

This will NOT read mp3 CD's. I've seen a DVD player from TCL which plays CD-R's & CD-RW's. My Pioneer reads audio CDR's as well as ReWritables. I doubt most other players would...

Toshiba SD-1600 is a great player for the price ($175 or so). I own the model previous to it (SD-1200) and it's a fabulous player for the price.

Pioneer makes a good unit, as does Sony. I'd get the one with the longest warranty and the best remote.

The_Dude8, good point about China and Japan. As a matter of principle I try and avoid supporting products originating from China; have to look a bit further and sometimes compromise on what I want but.....

JediKnut, not certain which receiver yet; there were several from Onkyo or Harmon Kardon that I was looking at. But I will be certain to match up options and capabilities. Any recommendations on a receiver??

How often have folks benefitted from multiple versus single disc players??
