Hope not, because I just bought a Sony dvd player that says upscaler to HD blah blah. But I notice all other brands say upconvert...

No difference hopefully?

You can't create resolution that isn't there to begin with..."upconvert" implies a more sophisticated algorithm than simply multiplying pixels to fill the screen, but I doubt there's any real difference.

Of course, I could be wrong.

Nope, you're not wrong. If the information isn't encoded on the DVD, then the Upscaler or Upconverter or whatever is just multiplying pixels.

Personally, I'd just use whatever you've got right now and spring for an HD-DVD or BluRay player once the prices come down and one format begins to dominate...

Not wrt to most DVD players, however not all upscalers are created equal.
