What do ya reccomend?

Gonna be hooked up to a 30" Widescreen CRT HDTV

DVD-A and/or SACD support would be a plus.... But PQ is most impt.

Hmm, I bought my girlfriend the cyberhome dvd-300 about this time last year for 50 bucks (now its even cheaper). It plays every dvd you throw at it plus mp3 cds and several types of vcd. She watches atleast a movie a day for the last year and sometimes several a day....It has yet to show any problems. Also its hackable to make it region free I hear....I don't know what else I would want out of a dvd player then that, its also compact.

Nevermind, I see now your looking for more then a simple dvd player 🙂

I'm in the same boat, I'm looking to upgrade from a low-end Samsung HTIB system (which to its credit has worked flawlessly) to a nicer component system. For this type of purchase I like to check the customer reviews on Amazon, but for DVD players they're worthless. Every manufacturer (and seemingly every model) has people giving them bad reviews for their players having major problems, with no clear trends whatsoever. It's also damn near impossible to tell which models are current and which are from 4 or 5 years ago.

That all being said at first I was liking the Yamaha because the remote on the model I looked at seemed so well designed, but am leaning towards the Pioneer at this point. They seem to get the best overall customer reviews, have a pretty good bang for the buck factor, and to have all those extra little nice touches (like optical out connections for example) that the other manufacturers seem to skimp on.

Whatever the best Pioneer model is you can find for the price... my $75 Pioneer has been stellar for me. I think it is the DV-120. So whatever their current model is, go for it.

Do you like this player? How is the DivX play back, any problems? Can it's codecs be upgraded via firmware flash?

Read the reviews on Amazon. It's a pretty high demand player. You'll be lucky if you can find it in stock in any b&m store.

From what I heard, the Divx playback depends on the quality of your rip. IE if you ripped it yourself, the quality is variable. But if it was ripped by some "professional warez group" like "deviance", then it'll probably play fine. And yes, the occasional new firmware releases support codec updates too.
