DVD Playback Quality

I have heard that DVD playback is not hugely affected by DVD ROM speed (that more refers to DVD Data disks), but what sort of DVD Playback can be expected with the following specs:

Intel Pentium II 400mhz
Nvidia Riva 128ZX (8MB)
Hollywood DVD Hardware Decorder Card
128MB PC100 SDRAM
2x20x DVD ROM

Thanks,

Corm

The normal Riva128 ZX has 8 MB memory?

I have a Riva128 (I'm not sure if it is ZX, but I think not) with 4 MB memory.

It's in a built in AGP card, it has it's own 8MB Memory frame buffer built in.

I think the Riva 128 came in 4+8mb versions and then ZX in just 8mb.

Well... if you use a software decoder, you MIGHT get a bit of a slowdown... this is a MIGHT.

If your planning to use the Hollywood Plus, make sure to get a better pass-thru cable if you are viewing it on the CRT since the pass-thru cable they provide is a POS one... it degrades your VGA quality period.

DVD movies are played at 1x speed so I wouldnt worry about that... and since your probably going to use the decoder card, you shouldnt have that much trouble.

find out what model that decoder is... if it's a hollywood+ you'll have very nice playback... if it's the first gen card, it'll be better then the performance hat you'd get using a software based player.(on that system at least)

BTW... that sounds like some sort of dell or micron... 8mb riva zx onboard and a DVD?

I have checked and it is fact a Cinemaster decoder card, not sure about the generation of the card, it was released around the same time as the DVD player which is 2nd generation.

The system is actually made by a company called Panrix, I hate OEM systems, they are so limited in expansion, 2 PCI and 1 ISA....oooooh, think of all the possibilities, I am having to change the modem into an ISA one just to put the decoder card in.

I would love to put it in mine, better monitor, much better graphics but at current, I would have to put it onto the same IDE cable as my Hard Drive, which I don't think is a good plan.

Would an ISA multi I/O card be a good idea because I can get hold of one easy, it has IDE connectors as well as a few others, would this use just one IRQ??

Cheers,

Jamie
