DVD overtake VHS for the first time at rental counters!

I remember the last time I rented a VHS tape, it was Requiem for a Dream. They had the DVD, but no one could find it on the shelves. I just HAD to see the Jennifer Connelly scene at the end with the other "performer" shall we say. It was all worth it.... 😀

DVD sales have eclipsed video sales, and just this past March, the weekly revenue from DVD rentals exceeded VHS rental revenue for the first time, according to VSDA.

Not for long... the same thing that happend to the music industry is about to happen to the movie industry.

Hey, my VCR fashes 12:00 🙂

It's broken, a tape is jammed in there and it just shuts down, so no reseting the time.

People will just pirate the crap out of DVDs like people did with music CDs to mp3 files... its inevitable.

They'll learn from the RIAA's mistakes and as long as they keep selling a 90 minute movie with some extras for the same price as a CD they'll be alright.

hmm alright, so people will download 6+ gigs to watch a movie?

And what's to stop people from ripping DVD movies now? What's going to happen that's not happening now?

But is it going to hit mainstream enough to affect the industry?

You don't believe everything the RIAA feeds you, do you? True, there is a slump in the music industry, but how big of a slump? We ARE in a recession you know? Every industry has been affected.

I think the difference between music and movie pirating is that pirated DVDs are very large files and are not as easy or convenient to download as mp3s. It's still happening of course, but maybe not to the extent that it is with mp3s?

How so? What is bad about it?

the dreaded "anti-black bar" consumers that will inevitably bring the widescreen era to its knees and welcome back the dreaded Pan and Scan.

Nah, HDTV is WS. Once it is affordable people will start to understand why widescreen is better. People are sheep, they do what companies tell them to do.
