1) You swap tapes frequently.
2) You have old VHS home videos.

Otherwise new DVD movies and DVD rentals are here, affordable and they're here to stay.

If you need to tape stuff get a PVR/DVR like everyone else. Of course the monthly/lifetime fee sucks :(
Legacy Technology always hangs around...
seems like just yesterday there were 8 Track Cartridges.....
Was asked about installing an 8 track in a Van conversion....
I was like WTF?? :Q

But recording would be a more interesting POLL.

I for one have Super VHS and it is very nice TYVM. DVD recorders still too expensive and they need to quit with the dual standard thing, it's soo 1979...

Because sometimes a movie isn't available for rent or purchase on DVD :)

No one said you had both formats. This poll is equivalent to "what do you have, DVD or VHS"? ;)

I've completely stopped renting and buying vhs tapes since I got a dvd player. However, I wish DVD players somehow marked the point a movie was at when the dvd player was turned off so the next time you turned it on it went back to that point (kinda like a vhs tape). That would be convenient.

They do.

As far as I know, all Sony DVD players (dating back as far as 2001) automatically save the position of up to 100 movies. My Panasonic DVD-CP72S (whoa) does it, but you need to press a memory button, and it does it for 5 movies only.

DVD.... of course!!! Only reason I still have VHS players in my home is to play old movies I own and to record TV shows.
