DVD or CD-RW. If you only had one choice. Which one?

If you only had one choice because you couldn't spend that much money, which one would you get? A Lite-On 16x burner or a Pioneer 16x DVD.

If I wanted to watch dvds I'd get dvd and if I wanted to burn cds I'd get a cd burner. If I wanted to do both, I'd get the one I wanted to do more.

No one can answer this question for you but you....

Personally my DVD because I use my DVD player (to watch my DVD movies collection) at least 15 movies : 1 CDR burned. I haven't taken details stats of this sort of thing...but I would say 25 or 30:1 is probably more reasonable. But bare minimum 15:1.

I don't pirate software, I back up important data, and occasionally make a copy of a really important CD, or make Win2k SP slipstreams...that's all the use I have for my CDRW, so it's an easy choice to me. I can easily live without any of it, or borrow a CDRW once in a while when I need it.

My roommate on the other hand can go through two or three 50 stacks (of CDs) in a good month, and would never use a DVD drive (if he had one, which he does not).

But how much do you want to watch movies on your PC compared to how often you will burn CDs...
No body can answer this for you but you.

Personally though defiantely a DVD rom.

Though, after having used a 10x Pioneer DVD and a 12x Toshiba, there is no way in hell I'd take the Pioneer over the Toshiba ;)
(Just a personal preference, I'm not suggesting you avoid the Pioneer, on a board this big you will find several users that love and several that hate any given product)

Thx Noriaki. I think I'll go with a CD-RW then when it comes round to upgrading. :). Then when I get somemore $$ a DVD-rom drive. Already have a DVD player with my entertainment setup.

If you already have the means to watch DVDs on a TV, I don't see much reason to get a DVD ROM drive.

Unless you don't have a tv/dvd and you plan on watching movies on your computer screen then I don't see any reason at all to have a dvd on your computer. I bet that only about 5% of people with dvd players on their computers use them for dvd's.

Enteresting comparison. I would think that this CD-RW is more expensive then the DVD drive, but I have a DVD and although I like it I would much rather have a CD-RW as at the very least I would be able to download dixv DVD rips and burn them on CDs and not just have a small and expensive DVD collection. In another sence. DVD prices are quite low and rather stable. I have not heard of a DVD drive faster then 16X in a long time while CD-RW speeds are increasing and prices are droping so you may want to get the DVD now and wait for an even cheeper burner later on like I am.

Don't they have combo DVD & CD-RW drives now? Unless you are on a budget I'd suggest getting one of those.

Cheers,

CD-RW.

If I want movies I'll get Divx copies or go to the movies (shock! outside!).

If I wanted a DVD player I would get a real one for my TV.
