DVD movies question

I never had a DVD before I put the one in this computer, so when I started playing movies on it, I assumed that it ran the way it was supposed to, i.e., a black band above and below the movie instead of the movie completely filling the monitor without any bands.

I have a Pioneer DVD 115, G400 Matrox Mill. Max (32meg), and use Power DVD ver. 3 to run movies. Monitor is a 17" Sony Trinitron, and my display is 1024x768x32.

So, is this is the "normal" way movies are supposed to play, or do I have some setting(s) wrong?

That is normal if you have it set up to play widescreen or letterbox. You can change the settings to pan and scan if you want it to take up the whole screen, but widescreen format is better.
