dvd movies acting weird?

Has this ever happend to you? I bought american history x dvd off a member here and the cd appears to be in perfect condition, no scratches or smudges. When playing the dvd I can recall a lot of parts where it just cuts out to a black screen and back to the movie. Sometimes it kinda freezes on me for a sec then resumes itself. Im almost positive its not the new dvd player I got (Samsung M301) My other dvds play fine. Could it be a manufacturing problem?

OHHH also just this past weekend I bought SE7EN, brand spanking new.. and it did that black screen thing. So I returned it and got a new one, I havent tried it out yet.

Sometimes some DVDs won't work on certain DVD players. Did you try it on another dvd player/drive?

Can you please explain a bit more? To my understanding all dvds purchashed in US should play fine on my dvd player, right?:frown:

I dont have anything other player to test it on.

sounds like a bad disc. it plays so it can read the disc, but the data flow is getting interupted. something happened to that disc. maybe it got overheated?

All DVD players are not the same. My Onkyo died after a year and a half, and it was always picky about the dvd's it played correctly. If it didn't play a rented dvd and I exchanged it at Blockbuster, it wouldn't play any of the same title. I payed over 500 dollars for that player. When it died it was out of warrenty and Circuit City wanted 65 dollars to troubleshoot it. Then they would ship it out for six weeks (Onkyo parts are hard to get). I went out and bought a 200 dollar Pioneer to replace it with.

Just go buy a PS2 to play DVD's on. Two birds with one stone. Or wait for the Xbox or Gamecube if your player is still somewhat alive.

About scratches and such. It's not the minor scratches that affect CD's and DVD's the most, it is dirt and grime getting in the pores of the plastic that cause dropouts. The best way to prevent this is to keep them clean, because once the pores get filled up with crap, the disk is going to be troublesome forever.

I hear Samsungs have a lot of trouble with certain DVDs, that may be your problem. If you do some research before buying you probably wouldn't have picked up the Samsung.

DVD players basically suck. That's the general concensus among me and my friends that have them. It seems that there isn't really a baseline for decoders. Movie A might have glitches in one part while another player plays it perfectly, while the perfect player of movie A has problems with movie B and the other player doesn't.

For now, just accept that you're not going to get perfect playback with any DVD player you buy.

Not true bober...I think you'd be hard pressed to find a DVD that won't play on one of the newer generation Panasonics Also, Panasonics first generation players such as the A120 never had any problems and many people still use them to this day without a single glitch.

I agree with kami my Panasonic works great. I have had one or two rentals that froze for a split second, but I never missed a word or scene. I figured the scratchs, which were evident on the underside, were the cause and that it just was trying to read the data.

Well.. personally I dont like the brand "samsung" but I got this for my birthday.. ::sigh:: should I go out and buy a sony and test that and return it?

I have a Samsung, and had the Matrix problem. After a firmware upgrade (under warranty) it solved many problems. I don't have many problems now, but sometimes I'll get a bit of artifacting or brief freezing. I wouldn't buy Samsung again, but for the price it's OK.

Do NOT buy Sony. Check out the reviews of various Sony players. There's far too many "piece of crap" type reviews for my taste. My friend who spent quite a bit on a Sony player has had his in the shop several times.

Give the DVD a try in another player first. I've only ever had one problem disc and that was Highlander. The sound is out of sync with my standalone RCA (which I love) and the letters are jittery on my computer. Definitely a poorly done dvd in general. A lot of people complained about the quality of it and I'm not even sure if it was worth the $2 I paid for it.

I must've watched over 100 movies with my Pioneer 333 and I NEVER had a single problem. Liek Kami said, you should do some research before buying...



edit-- And I find Audioreview isn't a very good place to do research, anybody who doesn't know what they're talking about can go give a product 5/5... Go to HT Forum, people usually know what they're talking about.

If it is, you can cram it. If not, then lets just go with the standard assumption that I'm in a bad mood and take things the wrong way.

At any rate, I'm sure you haven't had problems. A lot of people never have problems with a variety of brands and models. But it does seem that DVD players are one of the more problematic components. Go look at the reviews on AudioReview.com about your model. Read the reviews about any model. It seems that many DVD players seem to go bad over time. They work flawlessly the first several months, then problems start appearing.

It's probably just the fact that DVD is fairly new, it just caught on more quickly than other technologies. CD players were out for many years before they were mainstream while DVD is already mainstream after just a few years.

Sorry, didn't mean to be offensive...

I just think you're wrong when you say "just accept that you're not going to get perfect playback with any DVD player you buy. " There are plenty of DVD players that have zero problems, it's not limited to Pioneer or Panasonic... I do agree that DVDs can be more problematic, especially if you rent them. It's a fragile format, and who knows where they've been? (even if they don't always look scratched) Also, some movies that come out are more prone to problems, the movie Dinosaur comes to mind.

Anyways, DVD players may not have achieved the status of VCRs yet, with which you can just go to the nearest store and buy the cheapest one you can find and it'll work perfectly, but I don't think this means you should accept that a player only works sometimes...

I can also say (I'm not being an @ss here... ) that Samsung player aren't very good. (same thing for the Sony's except their top of the line stuff) I know everybody says to check out Audioreview, but 95% of the products listed there have a rating above 4/5, so it's very hard to compare. Decent brands are: Toshiba, Pioneer, Panasonic, JVC, Hitachi.

I have a Pioneer Dv-525......and except for occasionally screwing up the menu in my scratched gone in 60 seconds DVD.....it only sometimes stutters between chapters.......and that's maybe 1 of every 7 chapters if that much.
