DVD menus dont work

no matter which software i use (winDVD, windows media player, etc) the DVD intros will play, then when it gets to the menu the sound continues and the screen just goes black. If i then skip forward, the movie plays the whole way through with no problems. this happens with all of my DVDs

does anyone know what could be wrong?

that was the first thing i thought, but it doesn't make sense that the rest of it works... does it?
