DVD Media Type

Okay, I know this sounds like a n00b question, but here goes anyway... Is there an advantage to either DVD+R or DVD-R? I know that some DVD video players will only play one type, but for general computer use, does anyone have a preference? I don't see a price difference in either. Is one type more compatible in general with DVD-ROM drives, more reliable, etc...?

...just wondering which type I should invest in.

I've been told that DVD-Rs work better with most set-top DVD players and Xbox/PS2 type backups. Now, I have no proof or anything, but I will say that I buy only DVD-Rs and have never had a problem with any DVD in anything I've ever put it in, whether it's an older DVDROM drive, Xbox, PS2, and probably 5 different kinds of home theater DVD players. If it works, why change? 🙂

use taiyo yuden brand if you want extremely good media

While both are heavily supported (DVD-R;+R) DVD-R is definitely MORE widely supported on older hardware.

DVD-ROM works on anything.

A DVD-ROM booktype on a DVD+R will cause standalone players to treat the disc just like a pressed DVD-ROM disc.

Not my Panasonic DVD player. DVD+ anything won't work. The disc goes in, and without even trying, it'll say "No Disc". At least with some DVD-RW's, it'll try to read the disc before giving up. DVD+R/RW - it doesn't do anything.

What Jeff7 said. Some dye colors will not work in older players even with the booktype change. I used to get frustated at Panasonics, but DaeWoo moved up on my list lately 😉

BTW, this is a frequently asked question that Search would of yielded lots of results for...

I use Ritek G05 Hub Printable DVD-R 8x media with lots of success... unless Daewoo is involved - then a booktype of DVD-ROM +R disc USUALLY, but not always works. I had to send a customer to Fry's to buy a new burner/vhs combo (he was waiting for a price drop before replacing his Daewoo) to 'fix' this.

While it is rare to find, yes there are some standalones that are programmed to explicitly deny the use of DVD+R discs (even with DVD-ROM booktype).
This is all due to politics and an attempt to promote DVD-R over DVD+R.
