DVD Incompatibility Issues...

Ok, we've been buying various DVD burning drives and various media over the course of several years. We have always had some problems reading various disks, now and then. Where do most of the problems come from and how can we avoid them? I'm wondering about the following possible causes:

1. Different drives
2. DVD+R vs. DVD-R
3. Different speeds of media
4. Different brands of media
5. Different burning software

I pose this to those with lots of DVD burning experience. Which of the above are most likely to cause problems? Please comment on how to minimize any problems reading and writing DVDs. Thank you.

It normally boils down to the media brand, followed by the drives. If you have TY discs, they are usually much more forgiving being burned with a cheapo drive. However, even then a lousy drive may not burn the disc well enough to be read by other drives, and can be especially problematic for playback on DVD players. YMWV.

On the other hand, a quality DVD burner can usually (tho' not always) produce good burns on cheapo media.

I have an NEC 3500 and a Plextor 708A, and only burn on TY media, using Nero 6.6. As such, I haven't met another drive or DVD player that couldn't read my discs, and out of several hundred burns, have had only one coaster that I can remember...

I've used various models of NEC, Samsung, BenQ, LiteOn, and LG drives over the years, always using some version of Nero, and never had a problem with good media. Most of the time I use Verbatum media. I ocasionally use cheap media for stuff that is not for long term storage, and it will have trouble playing in anything but the original burner.

The best thing is to have a newer DVD player. I've only had problems on very old ones. You might also look into getting a burner that can do booktyping/bitsetting.

steer clear of anything memorex. my pioneer a04 was rubbish. nero 6, plextor, verbatim and fuji have been consistantly perfect for me, across portable/car cd players, stand alone equipment and dvd drives. if i were to buy a drive today it would easily be the samsung sata.
